Welcome to Lights & Kits: what we cover and why

An honest, hands-on publication for smart lighting, content creator gear, and DIY electronics kits. Here's what to expect from us.

By Lights & Kits Editorial · · 2 min read

We started Lights & Kits because nobody should have to read forty Amazon reviews to figure out which RGB bulb actually changes color smoothly, or which “professional” ring light is really just a $20 panel with a markup.

What we cover

We focus on five areas where buying decisions are genuinely hard:

  • Smart home lighting: Philips Hue, Govee, Nanoleaf, Lifx, and the long tail of cheaper systems. We test interoperability, app quality, and the small stuff (does it flicker on dimming?).
  • Content creator lighting: ring lights, key lights, RGB panels, and accessories for streamers, podcasters, and short-form video creators.
  • Gaming & RGB: desk setups, monitor lights, case lighting, and the ecosystems that hold it all together.
  • Holiday & seasonal lighting: Christmas lights that don’t fail in week two, outdoor permanent install systems, and projector lights worth their price.
  • DIY & STEM kits: soldering kits, Arduino starter packs, robotics kits for kids, and other build-it-yourself electronics.

Our editorial promise

  1. We test products. If we haven’t used something, we’ll say so.
  2. We disclose affiliate relationships. Yes, we earn commissions on some links. No, that doesn’t change our recommendations.
  3. We update posts when products change. Firmware updates, price changes, new versions: we revise instead of silently rewriting history.
  4. We won’t republish other sites’ articles. Every post here is our own analysis, our own testing, or our own synthesis.

What’s coming

In the next few weeks we’ll be publishing:

  • A head-to-head between the major smart bulb ecosystems
  • A buying guide for streaming lights under $200
  • Our first deep-dive review of the Govee Curtain Lights system
  • A starter guide for Arduino kits in 2026

If you want updates, grab our RSS feed. That’s it. No newsletter signup popup yet. We’ll earn that later.

Thanks for being here on day one.
