About Lights & Kits

An independent publication for gift guides, cool gadgets, smart home picks, holiday roundups, and DIY kits. Founded in 2026.

Last updated May 22, 2026

Lights & Kits is an independent publication for people who want to buy good gifts, find genuinely cool gadgets, set up a smart home that works, and pick kits that actually teach something. We exist because most product roundups online are reverse-engineered from search demand, not from anyone actually using the products.

The site was founded in 2026 and publishes year-round.

What we cover

We publish hands-on buying guides, head-to-head comparisons, gift roundups, and first-hand reviews across seven categories:

  • Gift Guides: persona-based (gamers, dads, new homeowners, college students) and price-based (under $30, under $100, premium). The reviews you would actually send to a friend.
  • Holidays & Events: Christmas, Mother's Day, Father's Day, Valentine's, weddings, graduations, Halloween. Every major US gifting occasion.
  • Cool Gadgets: desk gadgets, kitchen gadgets, EDC, weird-but-useful tech. The "wait, this exists?" vertical.
  • Smart Home: smart bulbs, plugs, sensors, doorbells, locks, robot vacuums, thermostats. Beyond the obvious.
  • Creator Gear: ring lights, key lights, microphones, webcams, capture cards, green screens. For streamers, podcasters, and YouTubers.
  • DIY & Kits: Arduino, Raspberry Pi, STEM robotics, soldering, electronics kits. For makers and parents shopping for makers.
  • News & Deals: product launches, industry trends, and honest takes on Black Friday and Cyber Monday "deals" (the ones worth your time, and the ones you should skip).

How we work

Every product we recommend has either been tested by a member of our editorial team or researched in depth using primary sources (manufacturer documentation, technical specifications, verified user reports, and trusted third-party benchmarks). When we have not physically tested a product, we say so in the post.

We do not republish other sites' articles. Every post on Lights & Kits is original analysis, original testing, or original synthesis. Our full editorial standards are documented in our editorial policy, including how we handle review units, corrections, and conflicts of interest.

Posts are written by our in-house editorial team. See author pages linked at the bottom of each post for individual bios.

How we make money

Lights & Kits earns a commission on some of the links in our posts (Amazon Associates and similar affiliate programs). These commissions do not change what we recommend or how we rank products. See our affiliate disclosure for the specifics, including which programs we participate in.

We do not accept payment for reviews, do not publish sponsored posts without clear labeling, and do not run editorial guest posts.
